Latency is the time between some input and the corresponding output. Different parts of a system may have different latencies, e.g., from a voice input to a response or from a head movement to a response. Latencies over 100 ms can degrade the perceived quality of a system. In simulators, driving simulators have latencies in the 40 ms - 80 ms range and flight simulators in the 100-150 ms range for low-maneuverabiliy situations. The FAA standard is 150 ms. Latencies over 200 ms may cause operator overcompensation and induce oscillations in a system.
